Annual Chairman's Ball To Honor 2011 Board Chairman Michael Byers, II, Feature Special Guest Speaker James M. Olson, Former CIA Officer
The Chamber’s 2011 Board Chairman Michael E. Byers, II, of Edward Jones will be honored and celebrated at the Annual Chairman’s Ball presented by Insperity on January 27.
Byers will perform the ritual “passing of the gavel” to incoming 2012 Board Chair Mark Micheletti of Berkeley Eye Center. This act will officially mark the close of Byers’ service presiding over the Chamber board and the official beginning of Micheletti’s term.
The annual ball will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, January 27 at the Houston Airport Marriott. More than 400 Chamber members, elected officials, dignitaries and guests are expected to attend and enjoy a rewarding evening full of entertainment, dinner and fun including a silent and live auction to raise funds to help fuel the work of Chamber in the coming year. The guest speaker for the evening will be Jim Olson, former CIA Officer, who will discuss his experiences as an overseas covert agent for the United States government.
Olson was a career officer in the Directorate of Operations of the Central Intelligence Agency, serving mostly overseas in clandestine operations. He served as Chief of Counterintellig
ence at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia. His overseas assignments included the U.S.S.R., Austria and Mexico and he speaks fluent French, German, Russian and Spanish.
He is the recipient of the Intelligence Medal of Merit, the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, the Counterintelligence Excellence Medal, the Donovan Award and several distinguished achievement awards. Olson was also awarded the Silver Star Award at the Bush School for excellence in teaching.
Olson’s experience includes international affairs, economics, trade negotiations, intelligence support to the military and the law enforcement community, counterintelligence, counterterrorism, counter-narcotics and technical collection systems. He has served as the senior intelligence advisor to several U.S. ambassadors and was an extensive liaison with the State Department, Treasury Department, FBI, Pentagon, NSC, NSA, DEA, INS and U.S. Congress.
He was a senior faculty member at the Joint Military Intelligence College in Washington, D.C in 1997 where he taught courses on counterintelligence and military intelligence. He was assigned by the CIA to the George Bush School of Government and Public Service in College Station, Texas, as an officer-in-residence in December 1997 where he teaches courses on Cold War Intelligence, U.S. National Security and International Crisis Management. In August 2000 he was appointed as a permanent faculty member of the Bush School.
Olson is the author of “The Ten Commandments of Counterintelligence,” Studies in Intelligence (Unclassified Edition), Fall-Winter 2001 and Fair Play: The Moral Dilemmas of Spying (Potomac Books, September 2006).
